The braking system is the lifeline of vehicle safety, and brake pads are the most critical consumable on this line. Neglecting the wear condition of brake pads can lead to compromised braking performance and damage to brake discs in mild cases, while severe instances could result in significantly increased stopping distances or even brake failure, with potentially catastrophic consequences. Recognizing the key signals indicating when to replace brake pads is essential safety knowledge for every vehicle owner.

Warning Sign 1: Piercing Alert – Listen for the "Screech"

Wear Indicator Activation: Modern brake pads are typically equipped with metal "wear indicators." When the friction material wears down to the safety limit (usually around 2-3mm remaining), the indicator contacts the brake disc directly, producing a persistent, high-pitched metallic scraping or "squealing" sound. This is the clearest and most urgent replacement command.

 Abnormal Noises: Even before reaching the wear limit, persistent "hissing," "grinding," or other unusual friction sounds during braking may indicate improper installation, the presence of hard spots or impurities in the pads, or damage to the brake disc, necessitating prompt inspection.

Soft Pedal/Increased Pedal Travel:

If pressing the brake pedal feels softer than usual, requires deeper depression to achieve the expected braking effect, or if you notice a significant reduction in braking power ("failing to stop"), this is often due to excessively worn brake pads. In such cases, the brake caliper piston requires greater travel to compensate, leading to abnormal feedback in the hydraulic system.

Brake Vibration:

During braking (especially at medium to high speeds), noticeable shaking or pulsation in the steering wheel or vehicle body typically indicates uneven wear on the brake disc surface (such as grooves or hot spot deformation) caused by severely worn brake pads. Both the brake pads and discs require immediate inspection.

Warning Sign 3: Visual Confirmation – The "Concrete Indicator" of Thickness

Thickness Measurement is the Gold Standard:

Regularly inspect the remaining thickness of the brake pad friction material by looking through the gaps in the wheel spokes or by visually checking during maintenance when the wheel is removed. When the friction material on any brake pad is 3 mm or less, immediate replacement is mandatory! (New brake pads typically measure around 10-12 mm thick).
