Professional repair institutions have identified aging and failure of the oil cooler seal (gasket or O-ring) as the common "primary culprit" behind such failures. This hidden danger poses a direct threat to driving safety, and vehicle owners urgently need to raise their awareness.

1. Sudden Leakage Creates Perilous Situations; Seal Failure is the Main Cause

During high-speed driving, the engine operates under high load and high-temperature conditions. The aged oil cooler seal (typically made of rubber) gradually hardens, loses elasticity, deforms, or even cracks under the sustained impact of high-temperature, high-pressure oil and long-term thermal cycling. Once the seal fails, pressurized oil can gush or seep out from the weakened point. At this moment, the dashboard oil pressure warning light is the most immediate alert signal. If the vehicle is not stopped and addressed promptly, the engine can suffer severe oil starvation within minutes, leading to cylinder scoring, seized crankshaft bearings, costly damage to core components, or even accidents.

2. Seal Aging is Not Isolated; Regular Inspection is Key

According to research from the American Automobile Association (AAA) and feedback from large repair chains, oil cooler seepage or leakage caused by seal aging accounts for a significant proportion (approximately 25%-30%) of engine oil-related failures. This is a high-incidence fault point for mature vehicles (typically those driven for 6-8 years or exceeding 100,000 kilometers in mileage). Historical statistics from the National Transportation Administration also show that road vehicle breakdowns caused by lubrication system failures (including oil leaks) consistently account for a high percentage. The key to avoiding such dangerous situations lies in preventive inspection and regular maintenance:

Regular Inspection: It is recommended that owners proactively request technicians, or personally check during routine maintenance (such as oil changes), for signs of oil stains or sludge buildup around the oil cooler and its connections.

Age/Mileage-Based Replacement: For vehicles reaching a certain age (e.g., 6-8 years) or higher mileage (e.g., 100,000-150,000 kilometers), even if no obvious leakage is detected, consider replacing the oil cooler seal (gasket/O-ring) as a preventive maintenance item when servicing related engine components (e.g., changing oil, coolant, timing belt kit). The seal itself is inexpensive (typically costing between tens to a hundred RMB), but its preventive value is immense.

Use Genuine/OEM-Quality Parts: When replacing seals, always choose genuine parts or high-quality brand components that meet the vehicle's specifications to ensure their oil and high-temperature resistance meets standards.

Immediate Action Upon Warning: If the oil pressure warning light illuminates while driving, safely pull over and stop the engine immediately, call for professional roadside assistance, and do NOT attempt to continue driving.
